The alternative protein

Eating the Meat-Free way!

Did you know that soy protein is a high-quality protein.  Protein is needed for optimal growth and tissue maintenance but it does not have to be animal based.  As a matter of fact, soy protein is nutritionally equal to the protein found in milk, eggs, and meat.

Foods that are not animal based, such as plant foods are naturally low in fat and cholesterol which makes them an excellent choice when trying to maintain heart heart.  In addition, several studies have concluded that soy protein lowers total cholesterol and triglycerides while keeping HDL cholesterol in tact. HDL is the good cholesterol.

The question about how much soy recommended still remains. Generally, it is  recommended that an individual consume 25 grams of soy per day. To reap the benefits of soy, the soy must have the isoflavones in tact. Isoflavones are a phenol which is the compound  found in soybeans that has a wide range of heart healthy benefit. Another important benefit to consuming foods with phenols as part of their genetic makeup is their ability to suppress oxidative cell  damage thereby protecting the body against certain types of cancers. Especially important to note, soy is extremely beneficial to prostate health in men.

Bottom line: If you are considering becoming a vegetarian or vegan, consider adding soy beans and other soy products to your diet for a more complete intake of plant based protein.
